Kelly’s the hero as Cherries stun Rovers
Forest Green returned home empty handed despite an indifferent display by AFCB
Ladies at Chapel Gate.
Kelly Merry sealed the victory for Bournemouth in the 79th minute after Rovers
had equalised Sarah Goddard’s first-ever goal for the club.
A 40 yard diagonal pass from Tara Elliott was latched onto by Lindsey Roe and
she squared for Goddard to slam the ball home from 8 yards. Rovers’ equaliser
was scored after a mix up in the Cherries defence allowed Philippa Helliwell
to nip in at the far post between Simkin & Stanford on the half-hour mark and
despite Bournemouth’s best efforts to retain the lead it stayed that way until
half time. HT: AFCB Ladies 1-1 Forest Green Rovers.
The Cherries attacking play improved in the second half but it was defensive
indecision that nearly allowed the visitors to capitalise on several occasions
and if it wasn’t for the alertness of keeper, Rachel Simkin this home victory
could easily have gone the other way
The Cherries’ winning goal was all about left midfielder, Kelly Merry. Having
timed her run to receive the ball from the right she unleashed a venomous shot
into the top left hand corner from 25 yards out and then got appropriately
mobbed by her team mates.
Manager quote;
“Kelly Merry worked hard today and although she struggled to complete 90
minutes it was a display of grit and determination that was rewarded with a
tremendous goal. We needed something special and she provided it. We had too
many players performing at half tilt and we’ll have to improve against Swindon
if we are to put them under any real pressure. I suppose the cliché is we
didn’t play well but got the result”.
